With Alpha Blondy as top act at the 10th anniversary festival in 2010 the African Music Festival proved that it can match up to other great events in the area. So we want to build on what we achieved last year and invited various great names from the African World and Reggae music scene to be able to present you with a top act every single day of the festival. We set ourselves the goal for the festival to play in the top league of World, Reggae and African Music Festivals and events.
The popular festival is also to serve as a platform for the understanding among different nations. We consciously built the festival up bit by bit and our main focus is not on the commercial side.
Our motto this year is Children of the Legends. We have Tosh 1, son of the Reggae legend Peter Tosh, who played with Bob Marley. With Femi Kuti another son of a legend is part of the cast – Fela Kuti was the inventor of Afrobeat. Last but not least, Nkulee Dube is the daughter of Lucky Dube, who was known as one of the leading African Reggae artists around the world.
On all days of the festival we offer a BAZAAR with arts and crafts, Rasta braiding, percussion and much more from around the world. At specified times we open the bazaar up to everybody at no charge, whether they are Africa fans already or Africa fans to be.
For the first time there will be a Band Contest, which is to give talented and (yet) relatively unknown artists a platform. The contest takes place on Thursday 4th August.
Friday 5th August will have the Reggae superstar TIKEN JAH FAKOLY. Tiken Jah Fakoly is the most famous Reggae musician of West Africa, next to Alpha Blondy. He has established himself as one of the leading figures in Africa’s new Reggae scene. Also on Friday 5th August plays Tosh 1, youngest son of Reggae legend Peter Tosh.
Street Parade On Saturday 6th August with percussion, acrobats, stilt walk, masks, Samba music, costumes etc. … The parade starts at 2 pm at the Evangelische Kirche and also ends there. You are most welcome to be part of this great and colourful parade and to cruise the streets together with the rest of the crowd in costumes.
The Afrobeat superstar FEMI KUTI & The Positive Force from Nigeria perform on Saturday 6th August. FEMI KUTI is the son of Nigerian musical legend Fela Kuti. In the course of his career Femi has added various facets to the Afrobeat invented by Fela Kuti.
NKULEE DUBE is the daughter of Reggae legend Lucky Dube. It had always been our dream to bring Lucky Dube to the festival. Sadly though, Lucky Dube was shot in 2007 by bandits. He left behind however a worthy successor indeed, NKULEE DUBE, who performs on Sunday 7th August. We are looking forward to welcoming Nkulee Dube at this year’s African Music Festival in Emmendingen.
On Sunday 7th August an African/ international church service will be held with pastor Metzger from the Evangelische Kirche in Emmendingen. The collection will again be donated to a charity project.
We are looking forward to welcoming you this year and hope for a great festival with lots of sunny days.
Raphael Kofi, Linda Siegel-Bentum and the African Music Festival team!
